Excessive tearing may be due to obstruction of the tear ducts (lacrimal passages). Surgery is performed to bypass the obstruction and create a new passage for the tears. A variety of conditions can result in lower eyelid malposition (entropion, ectropion, lid retraction), most of which are related to age. This can lead to eye irritation, redness, tearing and inadequate eye closure. Surgery is performed to reposition the eyelid and restore function. Expansion of the orbit by removing bone and/or soft tissue. This may be required for severe bulging of the eye (exophthalmos) in thyroid eye disease. A number of eyelid, orbital and lacrimal (tear duct) anomalies can effect children, usually starting at birth and becoming manifest within the first year of life. These include congenital malpositions of the eyelids, orbital vascular malformations (hemangiomas), and blocked tear ducts. He also has years of experience with pediatric lacerations and trauma.
